How LDS tithing is calculated
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that members should pay 10% of their increase as tithing. Each member decides personally what increase means for their situation. The most common approaches:
Salaried members
Tithe 10% of gross or net salary, depending on personal conviction. Both are widely accepted for full tithe-payer status. Use the calculator above with your annual or monthly salary.
Hourly and freelance members
Tithe 10% of total earnings for the period (whether weekly, monthly, or annually). For freelance or contract work, most members deduct legitimate business expenses first, then tithe 10% of the net.
Self-employed members
Increase is typically net business income — gross revenue minus business expenses — before personal income tax. Some members tithe before-tax; others tithe on the take-home draw.
Tithing is paid directly to the Church via your bishop or online at the official Church donations portal. Tithing settlement at year-end is when you confirm full or part-tithe-payer status.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as 'increase' for LDS tithing?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches members to pay 10% of their 'increase' — generally interpreted as income or annual financial gain. Each member decides personally what counts as increase. Many members tithe on gross salary; others on net; for self-employed members, it's typically net business income (gross revenue minus business expenses, before personal taxes).
Do I tithe gross or net income for LDS tithing?
The Church does not specify gross or net — the decision is between you and the Lord, and discussed with your bishop at tithing settlement if helpful. Many members tithe on gross income because they consider taxes part of their increase. Others tithe on net because that's what they actually receive. Both are accepted positions for being declared a full tithe-payer.
Where do I pay LDS tithing once calculated?
Once you know your tithing amount, you pay it directly to the Church using a Tithing and Donations slip submitted to your bishop, or online via the official Church donations system at donations.churchofjesuschrist.org. The calculator on this page only computes the amount — it does not process LDS tithing payments.
Is this calculator affiliated with the LDS Church?
No. This is an independent free calculator that works for any 10%-of-income tithe — including LDS tithing. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not endorse or operate this tool. For official LDS tithing guidance, see your bishop or the Church's official handbook.
